Journey Towards Freedom

This painting belongs to the children.

I created this artwork after noticing a beautiful pattern among my youngest collectors. While many adults are drawn to the vibrant colours of my contemporary collection, children often gravitate towards traditional Aboriginal dot painting. This piece became my way of honouring them.

Every white dot represents one of our world's young people—each one unique, each one carrying their own light. The black background symbolises the beautiful, breathtaking universe into which every child is born. Together, the contrast reminds us that every individual has the ability to shine brightly within something far greater than themselves.

Running through the centre is a red pathway.

To me, this pathway symbolises a journey towards freedom.

Not the kind of freedom that separates us from one another, but the kind that grows through courage, compassion, gratitude and love. Real freedom asks us to remember who we are, to care for one another, and to walk gently alongside Mother Earth.

As this path expands, it begins to ripple outward, much like honey bees travelling from flower to flower. One act of kindness inspires another. One courageous voice gives confidence to the next. Before long, those small acts become a movement.

One of my greatest inspirations is my niece, Isabella.

When she was five years old, she fell in love with bees. By the time she was around ten, she and her friends were petitioning their local council to plant more flowers because, in Isabella's words,

"The bees have no food, Nanii!"

Watching children advocate for the natural world with such determination filled me with hope. Their instinct wasn't to exploit Mother Earth—it was to care for her.

Again and again, I meet young people who choose kindness over fear. They remind adults that compassion is not weakness; it is leadership. They hold up mirrors to us; and often get into trouble for that. They remember their connection to Country, to each other, and to the living world around them.

This artwork is Aunty Nanii’s special thank you to all of the children of the world:

May your courage continue to spread like honey bees.

May your love create ripples across our world.

And may your journey towards freedom inspire us all. xx

The future isn't waiting for us. It's already here, wearing muddy shoes and planting flowers for the bees!

🤍
