Each limited-edition print is produced on premium 310gsm Canson Photo Rag paper, hand-numbered and embossed with Nanii’s signature. Prints are carefully rolled and shipped in a protective tube to ensure they arrive safely and ready to frame.
Some children count sheep before they fall asleep. I travelled the world.
When I was little, I developed my own bedtime routine to help me drift off to sleep.
Once I was tucked into bed, I would close my eyes and start imagining myself somewhere wonderful.
Quite often, I would begin in Fiji.
My family had travelled there on holiday, and I had completely fallen in love with it. In my imagination, Fiji became a big island in the middle of my dream — a place where I could wander around with my family and disappear into my own little world.
From there, I might head into the bush with Dad.
We loved exploring after those hot, humid days, searching for beautiful mushrooms hiding among the trees.
I still love mushroom hunting today.
Around my big island were lots of smaller islands, each one holding another happy memory.
I would jump from one to the next.
I might visit my cousins.
Have a pretend dinner at Pizza Hut.
Remember the time I dressed my cat up and pushed him around the streets in a stroller.
Wander through my strawberry patch in the garden.
Then I would think of another happy memory...
and another...
and another...
until eventually, without even noticing it, I had fallen asleep with a smile on my face.
Years later, I wanted to capture that little bedtime journey in a painting.
The large island in the centre represents the place where my dreaming would begin, while the smaller islands surrounding it represent the many happy memories I would visit along the way.
The black and white figures surrounding the central island represent my Star Family in the Dreaming — a symbol of the love and protection I have always felt around me.
I created this painting especially with children in mind.
And we have a young lady named Pip to thank for giving me the inspiration to create this painting.
Pip is a client's daughter who when I met her, had recently reached an exciting milestone: she had started sleeping in her own bed!
That got me thinking about all the little rituals children create to make bedtime feel safe, familiar and comforting.
So, I hope Young Nanii's Dreaming gives children another idea for their own bedtime journey.
Instead of counting sheep, perhaps they could visit their favourite memories.
A favourite holiday.
A special person.
A beloved pet.
A secret garden.
A funny family story.
They can jump from one happy little island to another...
until they drift off to sleep.
